Description

EGA Trek is based heavily on very early computer space simulation games. (ie. the first computer game ever, Space War!, aka Computer Space). Since this is a non-licensed game, it never refers to it as "Star Trek", but you know what they were going for. It includes color graphics that although sparse do the job well. The objective is to eliminate other ships and "save the galaxy". This is a simulation/strategy game with not a lot of action, so it won't be for everyone, but it definitely is a classic PC game.EGA Trek (DOS) is a text-based strategy game released in the early days of personal computing, designed to run on the DOS operating system with EGA graphics. It is a derivative of the classic Star Trek game, where players assume the role of a starship captain navigating through the galaxy. The objective is typically to protect the galaxy from enemy forces, particularly the Klingons, and complete various missions, all while managing the resources of the player's starship. EGA Graphics: While EGA Trek is largely a text-based game, it utilizes EGA graphics to represent certain visual aspects of the game, such as the starfield, enemy ships, and the star system map. The game's graphics, while rudimentary by modern standards, still provide basic visuals that enhance the immersive experience compared to earlier text-only games. Mission-Based Gameplay: Players are tasked with completing various missions, which usually involve destroying enemy ships, protecting planets, or exploring the galaxy. The game's narrative is driven by the missions, and success or failure often impacts the overall progress of the game. A common mission objective is to defeat the Klingon ships that threaten the Federation, similar to the original Star Trek games. Ship Management and Resources: Players must manage the starship’s resources, such as shields, energy, and ammo (torpedoes). These resources are limited, and careful management is crucial for survival and success. The ship can be damaged during combat, and players need to make strategic decisions regarding repairing the ship, refueling, or seeking refuge in nearby starbases. Players also have to navigate the galaxy map, which is made up of multiple sectors, each containing planets, stars, and enemy forces. Space Combat: The game features turn-based space combat, where players engage in battles with enemy ships, typically the Klingons. The player uses their starship's phasers, torpedoes, and shields to fight enemies. The combat is usually text-driven, with the player issuing commands to their ship, such as attacking, defending, or maneuvering. Players must choose their actions wisely during combat, considering the energy levels, shield status, and distance from the enemy.
